WishBone Medical, Inc. signs licensing agreement for the Guided Growth Plate

Warsaw, Indiana, December 14, 2018 – WishBone Medical, Inc. has been granted a global, non-exclusive license for the sale of a patented guided growth plating system in children with deformed limbs.  These 3 patents were created and designed for the gradual correction of pediatric deformities in both the upper and lower extremities.

WishBone Medical is designing and developing its own guided growth plate and instrumentation systems in sterile packed, single use, disposable kits.  This product will come in both the 2-hole and 4-hole plates systems in multiple sizes as well as options in stainless steel and titanium.  The anticipated launch will be in first quarter 2019, following FDA Clearance.

WishBone Medical, Inc. announces new AlloMate Bone Pin System

The AlloMate Bone Pin System consists of allograft bone pins and accessory instrumentation for quick, reliable and reproducible bone pin insertion.  The complete system will be available in five different individual sizes (2.0mm, 2.5mm, 3.0mm, 3.5mm, and 4.0mm) of sterilized human cortical bone pins & corresponding single-use instruments for convenient insertion. We will launch these various sizes in stages. The 3.0mm is currently available and the 2.5mm will be available soon followed by the 2.0mm and the additional sizes. Our initial market feedback with the 3.0mm system has been extremely positive.

These bone pins are sturdy, easy to handle and can integrate into the patient’s bone to help with the healing process. These sterile packed implants and instruments may potentially reduce the risk of infection and can be accurately trimmed intraoperatively to an appropriate length.

Daniel S. Schulman, D.P.M., helped develop this system and he said, “I have performed well over four hundred foot reconstructive procedures without the use of a metal implant.  I can validate that this system will definitely simplify the surgical technique and minimize intra-operative and post-operative surgical complications. Dr. Kunkel has been a consulting surgeon for WishBone Medical helping to develop several new innovative products and will continue in this role.  As a member of the Board of Advisors, he will be a part of an elite group of business people from around the world to provide strategic expertise and guidance for WishBone Medical. He is considered an expert in his field and was a team physician for the Indiana Pacers, Indiana Fever, USA Basketball, DePauw University and Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory school.

He has been a practicing physician at OrthoIndy for over 30 years. OrthoIndy is one of the largest orthopedic practices in the world.  Dr. Kunkel consults for several healthcare companies and has developed several successful products.

Dr. Kunkel earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Indiana University and his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine. He did his internship at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI. and his residency at Grand Rapids Orthopedic Surgery and Blodgett Memorial Medical Center. His fellowship was in Sports Medicine at the University of Toronto and at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedics.

Dr. Betz earned a Medical Degree from Temple University School of Medicine. His internship in general surgery and residency in orthopaedics was at Temple University Hospital. Dr. Betz completed his fellowship in Pediatric Orthopaedics from the Alfred I duPont Institute. He is a pediatric orthopedic surgeon with a focus on pediatric deformity correction.

He formerly was Chief of Staff at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Philadelphia. His current positions include a private practice at the Institute for Spine and Scoliosis in Lawrenceville, NJ, Clinical professor at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City and attending surgeon at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City and Saint Peter’s Children’s University Hospitals in New Brunswick, NY.

Research and product development is important to Dr. Betz, and he also has 17 patents. He belongs to several national and international professional societies. He has published 5 books, authored many medical texts and books; including 52 chapters for medical books and written 330 peer-reviewed articles.

An affiliate of Weill Cornell Medical College, HSS has a main campus in New York City and facilities in New Jersey, Connecticut and in the Long Island and Westchester County regions of New York State. In 2017 HSS provided care to 135,000 patients from 80 countries and performed more than 32,000 surgical procedures. In addition to patient care, HSS leads the field in research, innovation and education. The HSS Research Institute comprises 20 laboratories and 300 staff members focused on leading the advancement of musculoskeletal health through prevention of degeneration, tissue repair and tissue regeneration. The HSS Innovation Institute was formed in 2015 to realize the potential of new drugs, therapeutics and devices; the global standard total knee replacement was developed at HSS in 1969, and in 2017 HSS made 130 invention submissions (more than 2x the submissions in 2015). The HSS Education Institute provides continuing medical curriculum to more than 15,000 subscribing musculoskeletal healthcare professionals in 110 countries. Through HSS Global, the institution is collaborating with medical centers worldwide to advance the quality and value of care and to make world-class HSS care more accessible to more people.
